Anthony Joseph, joined by fellow wordsmiths James Massiah, Brother Portrait and more, will present his salute to the totemic American soul and jazz poet, musician and author Gil-Scott Heron on Saturday 31st March, the day before what would have been the late legend’s 69th birthday.

Gil-Scott Heron is considered by many to be the first rapper/MC ever, though the term he used to describe himself was ‘bluesologist’, which he defined as ‘a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues’. His extensive discography and live work helped to engender and characterise subsequent African-American music genres; his influence on the world of hip-hop cannot be understated.

There is no one better to present a tribute in London to Gil-Scott Heron than Strut Records’ Anthony Joseph. Joseph holds a PhD in creative writing from Goldsmiths College London, has released numerous poetry collections and records with his band the Spasm Band. Expect a fiery and passionate tribute to one of the most influential artists to ever come out of North America.
