Orphy Robinson is an award winning multi instrumental musician who specialises on Vibraphone/Marimba/Percussion. Robinson is widely regarded as a major figure on both the Uk & the International Jazz scene.          

In 2015 he achieved a top 12 placing in the ‘Best Vibraphonist’ category of the leading industry Jazz magazine Downbeat,’ The first musician from the Uk to ever achieve this accolade.

A versatile musician who plays across numerous genres. Robinson is one of a select few musicians from the UK to have been signed to the prestigious Jazz record label Blue Note,’ where he released two albums and two EPs to great International critical acclaim.

To date Robinson has appeared as a guest soloist or session musician on over 100 albums and counting.

Uk Audiences first became aware of Orphy as a founding member of the acclaimed early 1980s Brit Funk band Savanna,’ Who had two top selling R&B singles of note. He soon became an in demand session musician, guesting on many top selling records, these Included fellow UK groups like Imagination & Working Week. He then moved on to be an integral member of both the groundbreaking Jazz big band The Jazz Warriors” & Saxophonist Courtney Pine’s band in the mid 1980s, touring the world when Pine broke through on the international music scene with his Debut album Journey To The Urge Within”. 

Since 1980's Robinson has played, recorded or toured with numerous artists including Don Cherry, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Evan Parker, Carleen Anderson, Lionel Loueke, Wadada Leo Smith, William Parker,Hamid Drake, Joe McPhee, Robert Wyatt, Lester Bowie, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) Hugh Hopper, Shabaka Hutchings, Robert Plant, Jean Luc Ponty, Andy Shepherd & Joss Stone to name a few.

He has constantly shared stages with artists from other music fields such the Classical worlds biggest selling artist, the Brilliant Virtuoso Violinist Nigel Kennedy, whom Robinson has toured and recorded with since 2009, appearing as a guest soloist on three of Kennedy’s albums to date, including his latest offeringMy Worldreleased in January 2017. 

Robinson is a respected composer & music director in his own right receiving numerous high profile writing commissions for orchestras, film, TV, opera & contemporary dance. These have included a commission at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games with the Phoenix Dance company from Leeds.

Orphy has always had a keen interest in Education and has led numerous education projects in the community and In respected education establishments, he has enjoyed serving as an ‘Artists In Residence’ at two London Schools. For 15 years he musically directed the music education department for the Iconic East London venue The Hackney Empire, helping to develop their successful Artist development programme, that became a successful vehicle and instrumental in the successful transition to professional careers for many young exciting & talented students, some moving on to fledgling West End theatre careers, others such as Jermain Jackman gaining well deserved success through the TV Talent showThe Voice, while many have gone on to gain careers with some in demand chart topping successful groups & Artists.

Robinson has won numerous prestigious music awards and has received nominations many times, these have included in the education sector Jazz Educator of the year at the All party Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

In 2016 Orphy Co produced alongside acclaimed songstress Carleen Anderson her latest album Cage Street memorial,The Pilgrimage. The album went on to receive a nomination in the “Album of the year” category at "Giles Peterson’s Worldwide Fm awards". Anderson has been nominated for “Vocalist of the year” at the 2017 Jazz awards. Robinson also tours alongside Anderson as her musical director.  Robinson currently co-leads with award winning Pianist Pat Thomas the ground breaking Avant Garde / Free jazz group Black Topwho were nominated in the category of Jazz Innovation of the yearat the 2016 Jazz Fm Awards. Orphy himself won in the ‘Live Experience of the year’ category for the 2017 Jazz Awards for his Bobby Hutcherson Songbook’ concert delivered last year as a tribute to the life of the great Vibraphonist.

Orphy has become in recent years been invited to be a guest presenter of radio shows on Resonance Fm, Jazz FM, Solar Radio. Worldwide FM. He has on occasion at the London Jazz festival been the Dj at the Opening & Closing events of the festival.
